Creating a newspaper story
A sense of curiosity is pretty important in freelance press photography. A freelance who isn’t interested in what is happening around him won’t get very far.
This poster was stuck in the window of a British bar when the football (soccer) World Cup was being held. Almost the entire country was obsessed with football; just about every pub, bar and even nightclub had football showing on their TV screens.
But the owner of this bar apparently hated it. So much so that he refused to show football games on his TV screens and even banned football fans from his bar, presumably in case they even talked about football.
He was a rebel, and an eccentric. These two characteristics should make any budding freelance photographers’ ears twitch with interest.
If he were willing to talk about his attitude to football (he was), a story and picture like this will sell (it did).
He was a rebel and an eccentric - and the media loves rebellious eccentrics.
