Best friend or best man?
Should your best friend really be the best man at your wedding?
Although grooms often ask their best friend to be the best man at their wedding this might not always be a good idea.
Your best friend might be great fun and totally reliable – but he might also be totally unable to deal with the situation of being the best man at your wedding.
The blunt truth is, he has been great fun and totally reliable in the situations which you have both been in so far.
Different situation
But a wedding is a completely different situation. Weddings can be very demanding, they can demand an awful lot from the best man. When he agrees to be your best man it might be because he is just being loyal towards you. Subconsciously, he might be dreading the idea.
Role of best man
The role of best man calls for someone who is totally reliable. This probably won’t be a problem -your best friend really is totally reliable.
But he will also have to have a calm temperament, be a good organizer and be calm and a good organizer throughout your wedding day. He will also expect to have fun during this time. This is reasonable.
A good friend
If he doesn’t have these qualities, if he is looking forward to having fun without having any responsibilities, he might not be the best choice of best man.
Good friends – really good friends, that kind that you value, are hard to find. We aren’t talking acquaintances here – the kind of people that you might meet during your career and `get along with’.
If things go wrong at your wedding, and if the best man is responsible for this, and if he is also your best friend, you might lose this friendship.
Is it really worth risking this?
